Dealing with School,

Now and Beyond

Most of us will spend thousands of hours and days going to school. Whether you’re in a public, private, or home school, this time of your life holds some of your best and worst experiences.

We all have our own life to pursue,

Our own kind of dream to

be weaving . . .

And we all have the power to

make wishes come true,

As long as we keep believing.

—Louisa May Alcott

School is where we make some of our greatest friends, try new things, push ourselves, and try to figure out our place in the world. In this chapter we’ll talk about some of the biggest school-related issues teen girls face. Girls keep secrets about school too! Here are some of the most common.

SECRETS GIRLS KEEP ABOUT SCHOOL

I cheated on a test.

I have a crush on my teacher.

No one likes me.

I didn’t make the team.

I’m smarter than people realize.

I’m getting bad grades.

I’ve been harassed, and boys make sexual comments to me.

I have a learning disability. My parents can’t afford college.

I have really good grades.

I’m way too stressed.

I’m living my parents’ dream, but not mine.

However you look at it, girls keep many secrets about school. We’re going to cover all of these and more! Let’s start at the very beginning, and that’s with teachers, of course.

TEACHERS

Teachers can be wonderful. They know how to build us up, dream the best for us, challenge us, and encourage us to do well, but sometimes things don’t go so well. What if you don’t click with your teacher? Then what?

Put yourself in his or her shoes

Take a minute to think about your involvement in your teacher’s class. Is there a reason why your teacher might be upset with you? If the answer is yes, try to address the root problem. For example, maybe you’re late to class several times a week. Is there any way you can make sure you’re on time? Is there a reason you’re late so often? If so, you may want to schedule a time to talk about it with your teacher. If your answer is no, keep reading to help with your situation.

Be patient

Handling disagreements takes time.Whether you are mad at your teacher or he or she is mad at you, hurt feelings take time to heal.

Vanessa was an excellent and conscientious student. She always worked hard and gave her best in every class. She was very excited about the paper she’d just turned in to her English teacher. She knew it was the best work she’d ever done.

When she got the paper back, she was shocked to see a B on it and no explanation, no comments, nothing that would indicate why it had received a lower grade than her usual A.

She didn’t know what to do, and her mom suggested she talk to the teacher about it. When she did, the teacher brushed her off and said she didn’t have time to talk about it today, but she said to leave the paper and she’d take another look at it.

When Vanessa got to class the next day, the teacher handed her the paper.
